Pictured: Shocking moment polar bear attacks woman who climbed into zoo enclosure

This is the terrifying moment a woman was attacked by a polar bear after jumping into its zoo enclosure.
The 32-year-old leapt over bars at Berlin Zoo during the bears' feeding time yesterday.
Despite six zookeepers' efforts to distract the four predators kept in the enclosure, the woman was bitten several times on her arms and legs.
Shocking attack: A woman was mauled by a bear after jumping into a enclosure at Berlin Zoo

The brave keepers eventually managed to push the bear away and pull the woman to safety.
She was bitten by one of the four older polar bears in the enclosure and not by the famous Knut, who took Germany by storm as a cub after he was hand-raised by a keeper.

Still under attack, the woman swims for and then finally grabs a rope hanging down by rescuers
She finally escapes the bears and is rushed off to hospital for treatment

It is not known why the woman pulled the dangerous stunt but she initially appeared to be elated as she swam towards a bear in the enclosure.
It is not easy to access the enclosure, which is surrounded by a fence, a line of prickly hedges and a wall.
Heiner Kloes, a zoo spokesman, said keepers pushed the huge bear away before pulling the woman out.
She was taken to a hospital for treatment where she is now recovering after undergoing surgery to heal her wounds.

The proper hygiene when having acne problems

The acne affects millions of people worldwide from all races and ethnic groups. Usually the acne affects mostly youngsters and tends to clear away in mid twenties, but there are many exceptions of both men and women that still have acne problems in late forties and even fifties.
There are some treatments available but none of them can effectively eliminate acne. A very important aspect to pay attention when having acne problems is the hygiene. A good hygiene could ease up a little the acne and in some cases could improve the condition dramatically.
When it comes to proper hygiene for skin with acne there are few important aspects to respect during the everyday routine. Here are some tips:
- Avoid over wash: you need to keep your face clean, but is enough to wash it two times a day, once in the morning and once before going to bed. Use gentle products and avoid scrubbing.
- Do not use alcohol products: the alcohol increases the natural skin sebum secretion so it will make your acne worse.
- No picking or squeezing: by doing that you can make more damage that you think. Squeezing your blemishes could force the bacteria that causes acne even deeper in the skin and could also create scars.
- No touching: your hands are full of bacteria so every time you touch your face the risk of getting more bacteria into the pores gets higher. The P. acnes bacteria can be commonly found on skin but the infection develops only when it gets inside the pores and in the hair follicle.
- Use proper products: you can find different non-comedogenic and anti-acne products. If you find a combination that works for you stick with it and in time your acne condition could improve and even disappear.

Why Human Penises Lost Their Spines

DNA study offers clues to "impenetrable mystery" of evolution, expert says.

Men have lost the DNA code that once made human penises spiny, according to a new analysis of the human genome.
Penile spines, which are still present in several modern animals, are usually small barbs of keratin—a type of hard tissue—that line the outside of the organ.
The prehistoric male enhancement existed in the common ancestor of chimpanzees and humans, which lived about six million years ago, according to the gene analysis.
But the "penile spine enhancer" code disappeared from human genes before our common ancestor split into modern humans and Neanderthals about 700,000 years ago, said study co-author Gill Bejerano, a developmental biologist at Stanford University in California.
(See pictures: "'Torture' Phalluses Give Beetles Breeding Boost.")
In total, the scientists found at least 510 DNA "deletions" that have occurred during human evolution by comparing the human genome with those of a range of modern and extinct species—including chimps and Neanderthals.
These deletions have brought about various changes to our bodies, for instance, boosting our brain sizes and stripping our faces of sensory whiskers. (Explore an interactive of the human body.)
In addition to the penile spines, "we think there are probably 500 fascinating other stories out there—that's part of the excitement of this paper," Bejerano said.
DNA "Switches" Can Have Big Effects
The DNA deletions—actually the result of rare cell mutations—do not hinder the overall function of a gene, the study authors noted. (Get a genetics overview.)
"Think about it as a lightbulb that's controlled by lots of different switches," said study co-author David Kingsley, also of Stanford.
"If you smash the lightbulb, the lights go out," he said. But "if you just remove an individual switch, [you've] altered the response to one particular input. That may produce a big effect for that little circuit, but it still preserves lots of other things."
Co-author Bejerano emphasized that one of the paper's key messages is that sometimes small changes to DNA sequences can actually lead to larger, more elaborate structures in organisms, such as more complex brains.
To the University of Sheffield's Rhonda Snook, that concept is as interesting as the "titillating" penis findings.
Some "might think [the switches] are marginal," said Snook, who was not involved in the new research.
But these small tweaks "could have potentially really profound effects on the way that organisms evolve from their ancestors."
Monogamy Led to Simpler Penises?
For instance, such minor genetic shifts have made human penises smoother and simpler over time, according to the study, which appears tomorrow in the journal Nature.
This may be because men no longer need the additional hardware. In some modern animals, such as domestic cats, penile spines help males fertilize females when sperm competition inside the female is fierce.
For instance, the spines can break through copulatory plugs, or coagulated secretions of fluids placed inside the female by other males to prevent different sperm from fertilizing the egg.
(See "Sperm Recognize 'Brothers,' Team Up for Speed.")
But most women today are monogamous, and the males "are not just present during the competitive act of fertilization—they establish long-term relationships with females," Kingsley said.
Snook, who studies the evolution of sperm form and function, said theories linking simpler genitalia to monogamy are still tenuous.
For instance, a phylogenetic analysis—a study comparing the presence or absence of spiny penises in different organisms over time—would offer more insight.
Human Evolution an "Impenetrable Mystery"
Overall, this type of sophisticated DNA research became possible just ten years ago, when the human genome was published, Snook noted.
"We've got just such an amazing power now to know a lot more about how evolution really occurs and how it changes," she said.
(Related: "Human Genome Shows Proof of Recent Evolution, Survey Finds.")
Study co-author Kingsley added: "We happen to live in this magic time where we have the complete genome sequence of ourselves and our relatives."
Finding out how we became who we are "can be a huge, impenetrable mystery," he said, but we're "beginning to tease out some of the molecular differences that make us human."

A one-year-old child has been found pregnant

A team of doctors traced the biological courses to find out how a baby girl could be pregnant. It twists out that the mother of the pregnant baby at first had two embryos, but one began to develop in the uterus of the other fetus. In other words, the baby girl is carrying her unborn twin. Doctors are in discussion about the abortion to save the one-year-old

About 51 similar incidents have been recorded in medical history, although the occurrence rate is not high. The abnormality occurs in 1 in 500,000 live births. In June, 1999, the case of Sanju Bhagat from India attracted concentration. He had unknowingly carried his parasitic "twin" inside his body for 36 years.

Doctors were sure that the man had a gigantic tumor in his belly. However, they found fragments of human genitalia, hairs, limbs and jaws in the patient and finally removed an immature fetus that had legs and arms with long fingernails. In 2002, Indian doctors found a six-month-old boy to have a fetus inside. The dead fetus, which surgeons removed from the boy, weighed one kilo, while the boy himself weighed 6.5 kilos.

One of the world's most strange medical conditions is known as fetus in fetu. It is an extremely rare irregularity that occurs when a fetus gets trapped inside its twin. The trapped fetus can live as a parasite even past birth by forming an umbilical cordlike structure that leaches its twin's blood supply until it grows so big that it starts to harm the host, at which point doctors usually intervene. A fetus in fetu can be considered alive, but only in the intelligence that its part tissues have not yet died or been eliminated. Thus, the life of a fetus in fetu is innately limited to that of an invasive tumor.

Does this story freak you out as much as it freaks us out? Truly wacky!

World's time is up in 2012 as 'Armageddon will destroy Earth', campaigners believe

The world’s time is up in 2012, the year of Armageddon, according to both Nostradamus and Mayan prophesy.

Several “eclectic authors” claim that a “major, world-changing event” will take place during the same year of the London Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

According to campaigners, 2012 is a “year of spiritual transformation”.

The doomsday theorists quote the 1995 book, The Mayan Prophecies, which links the Maya calendar with long-period sunspot cycles. A Mayan elder has since dismissed those suggestions.

Another book, The Nostradamus Code, details a series of natural disasters caused by a comet… which will allow “the third anti-Christ to disperse his troops around the globe under the guise of aid in preparation for a nuclear war”.

Two Suns? Twin Stars Could Be Visible From Earth By 2012

Two Suns? Twin Stars Could Be Visible From Earth By 2012

Earth could be getting a second sun, at least temporarily.

Dr. Brad Carter, Senior Lecturer of Physics at the University of Southern Queensland, outlined the scenario to news.com.au. Betelgeuse, one of the night sky's brightest stars, is losing mass, indicating it is collapsing. It could run out of fuel and go super-nova at any time.

When that happens, for at least a few weeks, we'd see a second sun, Carter says. There may also be no night during that timeframe.

The Star Wars-esque scenario could happen by 2012, Carter says... or it could take longer. The explosion could also cause a neutron star or result in the formation of a black hole 1300 light years from Earth, reports news.com.au.

But doomsday sayers should be careful about speculation on this one. If the star does go super-nova, Earth will be showered with harmless particles, according to Carter. "They will flood through the Earth and bizarrely enough, even though the supernova we see visually will light up the night sky, 99 per cent of the energy in the supernova is released in these particles that will come through our bodies and through the Earth with absolutely no harm whatsoever," he told news.com.au.

In fact, a neutrino shower could be beneficial to Earth. According to Carter this "star stuff" makes up the universe. "It literally makes things like gold, silver - all the heavy elements - even things like uranium....a star like Betelgeuse is instantly forming for us all sorts of heavy elements and atoms that our own Earth and our own bodies have from long past supernovi," said Carter.

UPDATE: To clarify, the news.com.au article does not say a neutrino shower could be beneficial to Earth, but implies a supernova could be beneficial, stating, "Far from being a sign of the apocalypse, according to Dr Carter the supernova will provide Earth with elements necessary for survival and continuity."

UPDATE II:  Dr. Carter stressed that there is no way of knowing when the star may go supernova. U.S. astronomer Phil Plait added, "Betelgeuse might go up tonight, or it might not be for 100,000 years. We're just not sure."
